What is Advent: The season of Advent and it’s celebration starts four Sundays before Christmas and ends on Christmas Eve. Traditionally it marks the beginning of a new year for the Church, offering a fresh start to faith and worship. The word “Advent” comes from a Latin word which means “coming”. The Advent season is mainly about reflection and celebration of the birth of the Christ Child Jesus. Advent is also a time for hope and anticipation of Jesus’ glorious second coming at the end of the age.
Advent Wreath: The Advent Wreath was developed in the 1500s as a way to mark the season of Advent, preparing for the coming of Jesus Christ, the Light of the world. The wreath is made of evergreens, and is placed on a table with spaces for four candles around the wreath, 3 purple and 1 rose. Traditionally there are four themes, Hope, Peace, Joy and Love, celebrated during the season of Advent. Each week there is a lighting of the corresponding candle on the Advent Wreath. The fifth candle in the center (the white Christ candle) is to be lit on Christmas Eve.
The Advent Wreath becomes a symbol of light, which reminds us of Jesus’ words: “I am the light of the world: he that follows me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life” (John 8:12).
A Prayer for Hope, Peace, Joy and Love: Paul’s prayer in Romans 15:13 is that the God of Hope would fill us with all Joy and Peace in believing, and that we may abound in Hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. Paul writes earlier in this letter to the Romans that this Hope will not disappoint because God’s Love has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us. This Hope and this Power given to us is all because of the Greatest Gift that has ever been given. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life”. John 3:16
